MARSHAL RILEY [The Law — and the Exception to It]

Riley doesn't talk much about where he came from, and no one with any sense pushes the question. He wears the Marshal's badge because someone had to, and because he was the only one who could actually back it up. He is the Badlands' reluctant conscience — a man who walks the line between the law he represents and the Clan he genuinely loves. Riley doesn't ride against the Gunslingers so much as he rides with them, watching, managing, and occasionally pulling someone back from a line they can't uncross. He is more fixer than cop, more philosopher than lawman. He has a quiet authority that does not require volume. When Riley goes still, the room goes still with him.
